The Party

As I mentioned yesterday I'm working on a new show over at Square America which I'll probably have finished late next week. It'll be four or five different groups of photos- The Way Of All Flesh (with the extra photos from yesterday added), a group of 50 or so photos taken at various Arthur Murray dance events in the late 50s/early 60s (some of which I posted here last month), as well as a couple of brand new series. One will be about 50 photos taken at a very swinging late 60s/early 70s party- Here's a little preview!

is it just me or do others get the feeling (overwhelming, in fact) that these photos are from London? Something about the phone on the one wall...yes, it does seem like an intercom. the door handles, and the bizarre deco/nouveau staircase banister-ish thing? Of course, notice that i focus on the int. design rather than the swingin' shenangigans. Of course, the preponderance of akwardly dancing thin pasty dudes in tighty whiteys speaks to that whole british vibe too. AND, those chicks are hot! Maybelline models the lot of them.

I was too young to enjoy parties back then, but no, it's not UK. We don't have electric sockets half-way up the wall, and have 3-pin plugs in an inverted T. Also the communal living arrangement reminds me more of 'Friends' - everyone photographed as they arrive, at a door with spy-hole, letterbox, name-plate, both mortice and Yale locks. They're too old to be in a UK student residence, unless post-graduate. Candles in sconces and matching candlesticks, too ! And most houses/flats have a central hallway, so the toilet wouldn't open directly off the living-room. Bare wood floors ?

The 'phone has no dial, so it's an intercom to the door downstairs ? Or is there a receptionist/caretaker like in 'Saturday Night Fever' - "Any calls for me?"

On the other hand, the clothing, lampshades and orange curtains, games where you have to change clothes with someone of the opposite sex, the tightly-rolled umbrella, wooden bowl of satsumas, TV, haircuts and lifestyle would fit.

But no brown Y-fronts ?
