Encountering the Other

I just posted a new show over at Square America called Encounters With The Other (Adventures in Amateur Ethnography). It's about 50 photos most of which were taken by Americans while overseas- a couple of which are probably NSFW so view at your own risk. Here are a few safe ones.

Panorama

At the market this weekend I picked up a curious pair of photos- two relatively small panoramas featuring a family sitting in their living room with the same trio of people sitting on each side of the living room. I'm assuming these were done with a panoramic camera with a moving lens- one that could be set to stop at a certain point that would allow everyone to get up and change position. I know the old cirkut panoramic cameras had lenses that moved slow enough that someone who was standing on one end of a group photo could run from one end to the other while the photo was being taken and wind up appearing on both ends of the group in the photo. I do think the lens used in these pictures would have to stop as don't think the travel time in that small a space would be enough for the whole family to reset itself (I'm guessing this is what causes the line running vertically through the middle of each photo). I don't think it's a double exposure or some kind of masking of the negative using a regular camera with a wide-angle lens- you can see some very strange distortion in the middle of each photo caused (I think) by someone moving at the same time the lens was moving- check the bottom scan to see what I'm talking about. There would be no reason for that much distortion in a double exposure even with a wide-angle lens. Of course I could be totally wrong so if anybody knows more about how these were done please let me know. I've posted bigger scans of both panoramas here.

The Party

As I mentioned yesterday I'm working on a new show over at Square America which I'll probably have finished late next week. It'll be four or five different groups of photos- The Way Of All Flesh (with the extra photos from yesterday added), a group of 50 or so photos taken at various Arthur Murray dance events in the late 50s/early 60s (some of which I posted here last month), as well as a couple of brand new series. One will be about 50 photos taken at a very swinging late 60s/early 70s party- Here's a little preview!

The Way Of All Flesh Revisited

A few months ago I posted a series of photos of a woman that documented her as she aged over the course of 50 years or so called The Way of All Flesh. Well over the last 4 or 5 days that post got linked a bunch of places- First Stumbleupon, then metafilter, monkeyfilter, Reddit, and Digg- all told it got well over 100,000 hits! So as a thank you to everyone who linked it and visited I thought I'd post a few more photos of her though I'm not sure they add too much to the story. I do kind of wish I had included the last photo in the original post as it's maybe a bit more flattering than the last photo of the original series (though I should add that she made copies of that last strip so I'm sure she liked it at the time). Unfortunately, I don't have much more information about the photos to add- I got the photos at a flea market about 40 miles west of Chicago so she was probably from somewhere in the general Chicagoland vicinity. One thing I didn't mention in the original post- in fact the thing I found the most interesting at the time- was that other than a few photos of a dog (which the dealer wanted to keep because the dog looked a lot like a dog he had once had) all of the photos were of just that same woman- no family members, no boyfriends, etc... appear in any of the photos (except for one guy in the background of one of the late polaroids) which is very unusual. I know the dealer didn't go through them and seperate them out- he told me he hadn't even looked at them and as he sold me the whole lot for 10 dollars I have no reason to doubt him. As for those who doubt the authenticity of the series- I didn't touch (or re-touch, photoshop, etc...) any of the photos- they are exactly as I found them. And I can also say having looked at each photo pretty closely that they are all indeed of the same woman. I'm going to re-post the whole series with these new ones included over at Square America in the next couple of weeks along with several other series of photos (check back tomorrow for more details!).
