The Menagerie
I just did yet another show for my 2nd Anniversary special over at Square America. It's called The Menagerie. I've got to be honest- I'm not sure this one's ever going to see the light of day (if I hadn't spent so much time putting it together I would almost certainly have dumped it) so if you want to see about 60 photos of dogs, cats, elephants, and blurry monkeys you better head over and check it out now.

Update
I've just finished a couple of new shows for Square America, the first is called What Was Next- a small show focusing on the oblique narratives created by contact strips and composite prints.

The second is called On the Street which features a selection of photos taken by itinerant photographers in the 30s-50s who would roam the streets of big cities and tourist destinations snapping candid photos of people walking down the street which they would then try to sell to the person. The photos are often blurry, the prints almost always atrocious but they still give a fascinating glimpse of what streetlife was like during that era.

This will be part of the Some Places show which I've mentioned here before- you might notice the Some Other Places link on those pages isn't active yet but it should be shortly. Also the Down By The Tracks show is finished (though like the street show the Other Places link isn't operative yet. You might also notice that none of the shows are accessible through the main page as of yet- they're all part of my second anniversary show which I'll link up to the main site as soon as it's done. All of the new shows are done in a slideshow style format with thumbnails for navigation down on the bottom of the page. I'm not sure I'm going to be sticking with this format- these shows plus 2-3 others that I'm in the process of putting together will be but as for future shows I'm not so sure. The thumbnails make it a pain in the ass for me to change/update the show meaning once they're done, they're done unlike my other shows which I can update very easily. More importantly I'm kind of torn with regard to the size factor- I like having the scans bigger but I think they're perhaps a bit too big causing them to lose some of their intimate "snapshot" quality. Then again looking at pictures on a computer screen is hardly intimate to begin with so maybe it's not really an issue-we shall see.

Mea Culpa
Sorry not to have been posting here more regularly but for the last couple of months I've been feeling kind of like this guy-

The back of the photo reads "Evelyn's first cake 1932."
I have been feverishly working on some stuff for Square America, some things I've mentioned here but lots of other stuff too. The plan is put 6-7 new shows of 30-40 photos each up between now and July 1st. Hopefully I'll have at least one up in the next day or two. Until then, I'm guest posting over at Swapatorium today so head on over and check it out!

At the Window
I just posted a trial version of a new show At The Window (which will be part of a larger show- Some Places- which I'll finish sometime in the next week). I'm still not quite certain what the third place is going to be but I have some ideas and the whole thing should be finished soon.

Down By The Tracks
I have a beta version up of Down By The Tracks the first (well it'll actually be the second section) of a new show- Some Places- which I'll hopefully have finished next week. I think we tend to forget just how powerful a presence the railroad was in the conciousness of the country pre-1950. Before the construction of the great interstates in the 50s and 60s the railroads were the easiest way to get around the country and the tracks carried the same kind of symbolic weight- the promise of adventure or escape- that the open highways would a few decades later. Hopefully the photos in the show convey some of that.

Last week I mentioned I was working on a new show that I thought would done by now but as summer brings a certain lethargy I haven't gotten it done yet. It's going to be called Some Places. It'll probably start off in three small section of about 20-30 photos each. One will certainly be called At the Window.

A second will be called By the Tracks.

I'm not sure what the third place is going to be- possibly At the Bar

Or maybe In the Barracks

Or perhaps The Dark

I'm hoping this will be an ongoing project where I'm adding new places (and new photos to the existing ones) every month or so. I'm guessing it'll be up sometime next week- certainly by the end of June- as I have a Square America 2nd Anniversary Spectacular planned for July.

Now Even More Dynamic
I shoe-horned a couple more photos into the end of Family Dynamics. Why? Just because I felt like it!

Well, mainly because I wanted to get an extra-large scan of this photo up on the site.

At some point I'll probably add a seperate index page of thumbnails so you can jump straight to a particular photo but it probably won't be for a while as I want to get started on my next show which I'll preview tomorrow (if you're lucky).

Family Dynamics is here!
Family Dynamics, my new show of 50 of the best family photos Square America has to offer, has finally arrived! Unlike other shows, this one is formatted like a slide-show, one photo per page. The scans are also about 20% larger than usual. I think this is how I'll be doing most shows from here on out. I know I've haven't used thumbnails or some other method to let you navigate once you're inside the show- you basically have to click through all 50 photos (but they're all great so it's worth it right?). I'm just completely opposed to thumbnails- there's no way to tell if a photo is worth checking out by looking at something a 1/2" square. If anyone has any other navigation ideas I'm open to suggestions- I think 50 is about the maximum number of pictures I can click through without getting bored but maybe that number is lower for other folks- should it be more like 25-30? Of course, some of the shows I have up now are pretty massive- most have at least 100 photos- so for bigger shows I'll probably keep the old format of multiple photos on the same page. That said, I do like the larger size... I do have another show in mind that I should have up in the next couple of weeks, after which I'm hoping to do a little housekeeping on the site (and maybe add a few bells and whistles). You'll have to stay tuned to find out more!
