Some Introductory Remarks on the History of Summer
I've just added a new show over at Square America. No, it's not the small show of new squares I promised- rather, I decided to face my bete noire and post a show called Some Introductory Remarks on the History of Summer. It's a chronological survey of the first 60 summers of the 20th century (that's 1900-1960 for those of you who aren't math majors). I've been planning to do this show for the last three months (and have had all the photos for the show sitting in stacks on my living room floor for the last two) but the thought of scanning in a couple of hundred photos and transcribing any dates and comments written on the backs of the photos (necessary to keep the show in more or less chronological order) was just seemed like way to much work. So of course I waited until summer was almost over to finally get my act in gear, spending the better part of two days (during perfect weather no less and now that I'm done it's dreary and overcast of course) to bring you 60 years of summery goodness so you better like it! here's a small sample:

Might I be able to use one photo on my blog with reference to this gallery? The color "August 1959" is incredible...

Sure-as long as there's a link back to Square America you can post whatever you like. Thanks for checking out the site!

What an extraordinary show, Nick! I've only been through the 30's (started to get image fatigue and had to take a break) but I'm totally blown away. I even recognized a few from your Carl Hammer Gallery show.
Don't feel bad about the timing, either. There's a certain wistful melancholic feeling about the images that's perfect for this "last gasp of summer" period.
I need to rest up and view the rest tomorrow. Thanks so much for putting them up.
