The Painted World is here.
My latest show The Painted World, a collection of oddly, crudely, and sometimes beautifully hand-tinted photos is up over at Square America. Here's a small sample.

The Painted World

Right now I'm hard at work on my latest show for Square America. This one's tenatively called The Painted World (although I'm trying to come up with a better name). This one's a show of hand-tinted photos with a special emphasis on oddly or just plain poorly tinted photos. It should be up Tuesday or Wednesday but here's a little sneak peek.

Slide Show
The following photos are by Martin Johnson, a photographer active from the 50s through the 70sfrom St Charles, Illinois (about 50 miles west of Chicago). I came across his work when I purchased about 70 carousels of his slides at a flea market. While some of the stuff was your typical amateur family stuff there was also some work that I think is extraordinary, work reminiscent of the 1960s photography of Gary Winogrand and Lee Friedlander- shots taken from behind the wheel of the car while driving across country, a series of photos of burning buildings, and two series of photos taken of TV screens- one of JFK's funeral, the other of RFK's funeral.
I've added a page with about 25 of his photos to the Pocket Galleries over at Square America. Click here to see them all.
Here's a small selection.

Love Us Little (?) Taylor!
Tomorrow through Monday I'll be pinch-hitting (I mean posting photos) for my friend Ron over at the super-fantastic snapshot website bighappyfunhouse. If you've never been to the funhouse you'd better get over there and have a look. If your a funhouse fan- don't worry, I won't be messing with Ron's tried and true formula for big happiness.

(This is the opening of my novel-in-progress; the text of which will be written entirely on people's shoes.)

The Voyeur
The above photos were all taken by the same photographer- I had another 4 or 5 more (also all of women sunbathing) but I foolishly sold them. The burnt-in corners on a few of them make me think he might have been using some kind of concealed camera.

Americans Abroad
A few months ago on my old blog someone asked if I had any turn-of-the -century British or American colonial photos; while I couldn't find anything that really fit the bill I did come across this series of photos of some Americans travelling in the Far East (and probably the Caribbean) in the mid 1920s-early 1930s. While certainly not colonial per se, I think a certain colonial attitude is present. Only one photo is dated (1926) though the final photo is of Admiral Byrd's ship in the Panama Canal returning from the South Pole which would have been in 1930. Here's a few of the photos from the series.

If there's any particular subject matter/ genre of snapshot you'd like to see here on The Boat Lullabies please let me know- just keep in mind my collection is mainly made up of family snapshots from about 1910-1975.

The Pocket Galleries
I've added a new feature to my main site Square America. It's called The Pocket Galleries; a space where I can feature smaller shows (generally 5-25 photos). I just posted three small shows- the first is The North Shore Junior Craftsmen Airplane club: a series of 13 photos of a late 1930s model airplane club.

Click here to see the show.
Next is the entirety of the Anonymous Mirror Portraits series I featured on my old Boat Lullabies Blog

Click here to see that show.
And finally I've posted a nice series of boxing pictures in a show called The Sweet Science.

I hope you like them!!
